The Power of a Book Club

What do you get when a group of people gather to drink wine and talk about books?

A good time.

I have always enjoyed reading books but it takes time which, until last year, I didn’t think that I had. Late in 2013 I was asked to join a men’s book club and it has been a game changer for me. Not only have the novels expanded my perceptual map, but the monthly camaraderie is a night of laughter and sharing new wines. Our book selections in 2014 were primarily historical. Now, if you are like me, the history we had to learn in school was more about dates on a timeline. The books we have been reading go beyond the When. The Five Ws (Who, When, Where, Why and What) paint an entire picture of an historical event/s and the impact on life today. Paul Harvey, the great radio broadcaster, always had a segment called The Rest of the Story; stories filled with little known or forgotten facts. History made relevant and interesting.

My favorite selections from 2014 were:

The Billionaire’s Vinegar by Benjamin Wallace (The Mystery of the World’s Most Expensive Bottle of Wine)

1959 The Year Everything Changed by Fred Kaplan

The Big Burn (Teddy Roosevelt & the Fire That Saved America) by Timothy Egan.

Each month this year I will share with you the books I am reading and perhaps, you too will discover that reading a book is time well-spent!

What books have you read and enjoyed lately?
