Tuesday 10: Where to Find Fort Collins Food Trucks

Several years ago the food truck selection was limited to a gal (sometimes guy) that had a pushcart hot dog business. Day and night, winter or summer, she (or he) pushed her cart to Old Town Square and sold dogs to the late night party crowd.

After visiting my favorite oldest daughter in Austin, I discovered an abundance of gourmet food trucks. They served everything from African cuisine to make-your-own cookie sandwiches. When she lived in Portland, my favorite youngest daughter always took advantage of the food trucks for lunch. My wife and I are fans of the Lucky Dog trucks in New Orleans that are such an institution they were featured in John Kennedy Tool’s 1980 novel “A Confederacy of Dunces.”

Food trucks in Fort Collins have evolved beyond the simple hot dog pushcart. With the petition to loosen street food restrictions, new trucks are popping up everywhere. Here are ten places to go if you feel like playing “find the food truck.”

1. The Coloradoan – 1300 Riverside Ave – Lunchtime only – With warmer weather here, the Coloradoan is hosting food trucks in its parking lot for lunchtime on select dates. We dropped by a couple of times last year for a quick lunch. Don’t expect luxury seating, they only have a couple of benches, grass, and a concrete ledge, but there’s nothing like a summer picnic. http://www.coloradoan.com/story/life/food/2015/01/26/fort-collins-food-trucks-coloradoan/22350605/

2. City Park – Food Truck Rally – Sheldon Drive – 5:30PM- Dusk, select Tuesdays – Pack a picnic blanket and head to City Park for a slew of delicious dinner options. Live music or other entertainment will be provided. http://fortcollinsfoodtrucks.com/news/2015-city-park-food-truck-rally-schedule/

3. Breweries- Various times and locations – Breweries and food trucks are the perfect pairing. Searching for food trucks makes a great excuse to go and sample different beers. Odell’s and Zwei Brewing are both good options to start your search.

4. Festivals- Various times and locations – The season for outdoor festivals has arrived and food trucks are certain to show up. Two of the largest, New West Fest and Taste of Fort Collins, offer plenty of options.

5. Churches – Heart of the Rockies Christian Church – FoCo Food Truck Wednesdays – 3rd Wednesdays 5PM-8PM – Music, picnics, and the opportunity for food truck hopping…you won’t lack options for every taste and craving. https://www.facebook.com/foodtruckwednesday

6. Social Media Locators – Prefer to plan ahead? Look online to see where your favorite food trucks are parked for the day.

7. Front Range Rally – 2600 N Lincoln Ave, Loveland – May 30th 2:30PM-7PM – 50 craft breweries, 12 food trucks, and 2 live bands equals plenty of fun. http://frontrangerally.com/

8. Farmers Markets – Various locations – Grocery and lunch shopping in one. This year, at the Drake and Shields market, my wife has already spotted a kettle corn truck, healthy eating truck known for their spring rolls, and bar-b-q truck. Who knows what next week will bring?

9. Downtown Fort Collins – The Waffle Lab is one staple downtown. Check out http://fortcollinsfoodtrucks.com/place/ to see what other trucks may be hanging out.

10. CSU Campus- With all of their permanent dining options, CSU doesn’t allow many food trucks to park on campus. When they do, they’re always popular. Look for food trucks during special events. Upcoming: The Bliss Run, Saturday, May 9th.

Have you tried any local food trucks?
