Tuesday 10: A List of Want-to-Eat-Everyday NoCo Burgers

I have a habit that makes my wife roll her eyes: a quest for the best burger.

Earlier this week, I met with my friend, Brendan, at Big Al’s Burgers in downtown Fort Collins. Our habit is to order the “Hippiecrit” Burger. They layer a beef patty over a veggie patty with cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, onions, and sauce. Best eaten with a side of truffle fries and/ or a milkshake.

Did you know there’s an ideal method to eat a burger as revealed on a Japanese TV show? Gripping the burger with thumbs and pinkies on the bottom and your other three fingers on top helps decrease spillage. I’ve tried it and it seems to work. http://aht.seriouseats.com/archives/2014/02/japanese-experts-reveal-the-ideal-way-to-eat-a-large-burger.html

To fulfill your craving for a burger, whether unique, vegetarian, or simple classics, here are my personal favorites:

1. Big Al’s – 140 W Mountain Ave, Fort Collins – Hippiecrit Burger – If the description above didn’t make your mouth water, they have other options. Both my favorite youngest and middle daughters say they have one of the best veggie burgers they’ve ever eaten. https://www.facebook.com/bigalsburgersanddogs

2. Tasty Harmony – 130 S Mason, Fort Collins – Bigboy Burger – My brother, the Nebraska carnivore, asks about this veggie burger every time he visits. Made from rice, beans, and soy on a toasted roll with tomato, lettuce, grilled onion, pickles, Thousand Island, and mustard. http://www.tastyharmony.com/site/index.php

3. Okole Maluna – 431 Main St, Windsor – Loco Moco – Make sure you take a long walk before this one. Homemade hamburger with 2 eggs over easy on 2 scoops of rice and smothered in brown gravy…delicious. http://www.okole-maluna.com/index.shtml

4. Larkburger – 2539 S College Ave, Fort Collins – Larkburger – Black angus beef, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle, and house sauce. Tastes exceptionally fresh. http://larkburger.com/

5. 5 Guys- 2842 Council Tree Ave, Fort Collins & 1335 W Elizabeth, Fort Collins – Pretty good for fast food. http://www.fiveguys.com/home2014/index_us.html

6. Merlot Burgers – At home! – Bonus: you can drink the extra Merlot while cooking. http://www.thebrewerandthebaker.com/archives/1196

7. Penelope’s – 229 West Elkhorn Ave, Estes Park – Old Fashioned Beef Burger – We often stop here for a quick lunch before wandering around downtown Estes. The burgers are simple and delicious. http://www.penelopesburgers.com/

8. Austin’s American Grill – 2815 E Harmony Rd, Fort Collins & 100 W Mountain Ave, Fort Collins – Buffalo Burger – My wife and I often meet at Austin’s for lunch (it’s right by my office). The Buffalo Burger is topped with white cheddar and onion straws. With a side of slaw, it provides energy for the rest of the day. http://austinsamericangrill.com/

9. Avogadro’s Number – 605 S Mason St, Fort Collins – Tempeh Burger – Another vegetarian option. Bring a friend (or a big appetite) and go for their Tempeh Tuesday where the burgers are 2-for-1. http://www.avogadros.com/

10. Avery Brewing – 4910 Nautilus Ct, Boulder – Cheeseburger – Slightly biased on this one (and briefly leaving NoCo) since my favorite middle daughter works here. Ground chuck, smoked gouda, sherry greens, pickles, and stout onions. Everything on the menu, especially the burger…amazing, just amazing. http://averybrewing.com/?verified=true

What’s your favorite burger?
